When we honour the Earth…
I’m pleased to announce that my solo show On The Ground with Artists In Canada is now online for viewing! This online art show exhibits 20 of the artworks from my On The Ground body of work. A BIG Thank-you to Paul and the Artists In Canada team for supporting and promoting us artists!
The following is AIC’s writeup about me and my work:
Jan Jenkins responds to Swarm, a dystopian novel on subsistence survivalism by author Lauren Carter. In their struggle to survive in the rural wilds, the characters' hope and desolation are mirrored in the swarm of bees that they keep. For Jenkins, this story is about cooperation, compassion, hard work, and persistence in the face of adversity. She was drawn to the wilderness survival skills the characters in Swarm would have had to acquire to live off the land. Jenkins committed to learning about bees, wild edibles that grow in Manitoba, and handmaking paper from recyclable trash and she explored ways to creatively express her vision of the bounty that the wilds of Manitoba have to offer through her hand-making paper, pen and ink, printmaking, watercolour and collage. On the Ground is the outcome.
Jenkin's work is influenced by the meditative practice of zendoodling and the intricate repeating patterns found in textiles, decorative tiling, and nature.
Jan Jenkins, a multi-disciplinary Artist from Brandon, creates pen and ink zenworks, original hand pulled prints, acrylic paintings, oil pastel sgraffitos, and other original artwork for smaller living spaces. Limited edition reproduction prints and art cards of some of her art works are available for purchase. Jan also creates hand braided jewelry and wearable art for that unique look. In creating these works I was once again reminded how delicate the balance of our planet’s health and our survival is, how dependent we are on what the earth can provide. A more moderate and gentle use and the ongoing stewardship of our mother earth moving forward is key so that future generations of our world’s inhabitants may continue to celebrate life and enjoy her bounty.
In closing, may your summer be green and joyful and your gardens lush and busy with bees!
